The hair at the tip is the oldest hair on your head, and it has been through more heat styling, more friction against clothing and pillows, more sun exposure, and more chemical processing than the hair closer to the root. Eventually the cuticle cannot hold together and the strand separates.
Split ends do not heal. No product, mask, or treatment can fuse the cuticle back together once it has split. The only fix is removal. A precision cut removes the damaged section and prevents the split from traveling further up the shaft. Clients who avoid cuts to preserve length end up losing more length over time because the split continues upward and forces a more aggressive cut later.
Prevention is friction management. Satin pillowcases reduce the friction that happens during sleep.
