  • Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt Glaze: The Styling Product I Learned On

    Apr 19, 2026by Nicholas Mirabella
    Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt Glaze

I learned how to do a bouncy blowout with Paul Mitchell Super Sculpt Glaze in my hand. It was one of the first styling products I ever used behind the chair, and 27 years later I still keep a bottle at my station. Some products earn their stripes by evolving. This one earned them by not needing to.

Super Sculpt is a flexible-hold styling glaze. It's not trendy. It's not heavily marketed. It's a workhorse, and if you want to understand what a classic bouncy blowout is built on, you need to know this product.

What a Styling Glaze Actually Is

A glaze is a styling product between a gel and a lotion. It's liquid, lightweight, and designed to be applied to damp hair before blow-drying.

Gels set hard. Creams soften. Glazes give you medium hold with flexibility, meaning the hair is locked into a shape but still moves naturally. That's exactly what you want for a blowout. A gel would make a blowout crunchy. A cream wouldn't hold the bounce past an hour. A glaze sits in the middle.

    Who This Product Is For

    • Medium to long hair that needs shape
    • Fine to medium density (can be too heavy for very fine hair if overused)
    • Classic blowout lovers (bouncy, polished, not messy beach texture)
    • Clients who do their own hair at home and want salon-quality hold
    • Updo prep (apply before you curl and pin)

Skip if you want effortless beachy texture or piecey separation. Super Sculpt is built for smooth, round, shaped styles, not tousle.

    Why This One Works

Super Sculpt is built on a resin-based hold system with wheat protein and panthenol (pro-vitamin B5). The resin creates the hold. The protein and panthenol keep the hair flexible and moisturized inside that hold. That's the magic of a glaze versus a pure gel.

It's humidity-resistant. New Jersey summers are the real-world test, and Super Sculpt holds through muggy July afternoons better than most.

It's also paraben-free and color-safe. Safe for daily use without buildup issues.

How to Layer With Other Styling Products

Super Sculpt is the base layer. It goes on first, to damp hair, before anything else. Here's my typical stack for a classic bouncy blowout at home:

    1. Towel-dry hair to damp
    2. Super Sculpt Glaze (half-dollar amount for mid-length, quarter amount for shorter), worked through mid to ends, light pass at root
    3. Heat protectant (like Amika Blockade)
    4. Rough-dry to 80%
    5. Round brush with tension, follow with dryer
    6. Cool shot at the end of each section
    7. Light finishing spray (Moroccanoil Glimmer or similar)

The glaze does the structural work. Everything after is polish.

    My Personal Go-To Technique

Here's what I do on a client who wants a classic bouncy blowout:

Towel-dry, apply Super Sculpt through the lengths, comb through with a wide-tooth. Start the dryer on the roots, flipping the head forward for lift. Once the root is 60% dry, flip back up and section into 4-6 clips.

Work bottom sections first. Large round brush (3-inch for medium length). Roll the brush under at the ends for that classic curl-under finish. Blast with heat on the brush, cool shot to lock, slide the brush out.

Repeat section by section, top down. The result is the polished, bouncy, slightly curled-under look you see in every 90s movie. Never out of style.

    Real Client Scenario

A client in her late 50s, mid-length silver-blonde hair, had been going to the same stylist for 20 years who retired. She came to me wanting her signature blowout. Classic bouncy, curled under, polished. Her old stylist had never told her what products were being used.

I walked her through Super Sculpt plus a round brush. She bought a bottle, a brush, and now does her own blowout at home. She's 64 now and her hair looks the way it always has. That's the value of a product that hasn't changed in 30 years. Learn it once, use it forever.

    The Honest Tradeoff

It's old-school. If you want a modern messy texture, a beachy wave, or a piecey air-dry finish, this product is wrong for you. It's built for polish, not tousle.

Over-applying gets crunchy. A half-dollar-size amount is the ceiling for mid-length hair. More than that and you'll feel the hold. Use it lightly.

It also doesn't offer heat protection. Layer a real heat protectant on top before you pick up the hot tools.

    Pro Tips Clients Rarely Know

    • Apply to damp hair only. On dry hair it'll flake. This is a wet-application product.
    • Comb through before drying. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute evenly. Uneven application equals uneven hold.
    • Cool shot is not optional. Heat opens the cuticle, cool locks it. The cool shot is what sets the shape the glaze is holding.
    • Store upside down. Once you're below halfway, flip the bottle. You'll get every last drop out instead of leaving a quarter ounce at the bottom.

Is Super Sculpt Glaze for curly hair?

It works on curly hair as a setting lotion under a diffuser, but it's primarily designed for straight or wavy hair with a blowout.

    Will it flake?

Only if applied to dry hair or dramatically over-applied. On damp hair at the right amount, it dries clean.

How does it compare to a mousse?

Mousse is lighter and more volume-focused. Super Sculpt is heavier, more shape-focused. For a classic blowout with hold, glaze beats mousse.

Can I use it on second-day hair?

No, it's a wet-application product. For day-two hair, use a dry shampoo or a light mist of finishing spray.

    Is it color-safe?

Yes. Paraben-free and gentle enough for daily use on color.
