Paul Mitchell's Volume Extra-Body Shampoo is a body-building shampoo for hair that's flat, fine, or just needs more lift. It gently cleanses while working panthenol and wheat-derived ingredients into the formula to boost body and help protect strands.
Who this is for
Fine, flat, or thin-feeling hair that needs more fullness day to day. Panthenol is included to help support body and help repair damage, and the wheat-derived ingredients are there to help protect strands and leave hair feeling silky-smooth.
Who should skip it
If your hair is already coarse, thick, or on the dry side, a volumizing shampoo isn't the right tool, you don't need more lift, you need more moisture. Awapuhi Shampoo (above) is the better daily choice for that.
If you're using a lot of heavy styling cream or oil-based product, this shampoo's volumizing effect will be working against whatever weight those products are adding. Lighten up the rest of the routine if body is the goal.
How a stylist uses it
Massage into wet hair, focusing at the roots where volume actually shows up, rinse, and repeat if needed. Keep conditioner light and only on the ends afterward, a heavy conditioner applied root-to-tip will undo the volume this shampoo just built.
How it compares
Against Awapuhi Shampoo: Awapuhi balances moisture for a general daily wash. Volume Extra-Body trades a bit of that moisture focus for lift and body. Fine, flat hair does better with this one. Normal to dry hair does better with Awapuhi.
What to expect
Hair that feels thicker and looks fuller from the root, with a silky-smooth finish from the wheat-derived ingredients. The tradeoff with most volumizing shampoos, this one included, is that the lighter, body-focused formula isn't the deepest moisture option, so very dry hair may need a richer conditioner alongside it to balance that out.
