Seasonal Haircare Tips : Keep Your Locks Fabulous All Year Long
Seasonal haircare adjustments address the specific challenges each season brings to your hair, from winter dryness to summer chlorine damage to fall static. The key is understanding which problems your hair actually faces in each season and adjusting products and techniques accordingly.
Hi, I'm Jennifer Lopez, and in my 20+ years at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ, I've watched the same patterns repeat every year. Clients come in with winter dryness in February, summer frizz in July, and fall breakage in October. The good news? Most seasonal hair problems are totally preventable if you adjust your routine ahead of time.
Spring Hair Care (March - May)
Spring in North Jersey means fluctuating temperatures and rain. Your hair is transitioning out of winter dryness but isn't ready for humidity yet.
What's Happening to Your Hair
After months of indoor heat and cold air, your hair is likely dehydrated, dull, and maybe a little staticky. Spring is recovery time.
What to Do
- Get a trim. Cut off those dead winter ends so your hair can grow healthy through summer.
- Clarify. Winter buildup from heavier products needs to go. Use Shibui Clarifying Shampoo ($22) once a week to reset.
- Switch to lighter moisture. Trade your heavy winter conditioner for something like Amika Normcore Signature Conditioner ($27). You need hydration, but not heaviness.
- Start UV protection early. The sun gets stronger in spring. If you're spending time outdoors, protect your color and your hair's integrity.
Summer Hair Care (June - August)
Summer is the hardest season on hair, period. Between UV, chlorine, salt water, and humidity, your hair is getting hit from every direction. This is when we see the most damage at our Fairfield salon.
What's Happening to Your Hair
UV rays break down proteins. Chlorine strips moisture and can turn blonde hair green. Salt water dehydrates. Humidity makes everything frizzy. It's a lot.
What to Do
- Deep condition weekly. Non-negotiable. Olaplex 4-in-1 Bond Moisture Mask ($76) is incredible for summer repair.
- Use leave-in protection. Amika Hydro Rush Leave-In Conditioner ($31) adds moisture all day without weighing you down.
- Wet hair before swimming. Saturated hair absorbs less chlorine and salt.
- Wash less, dry shampoo more. Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo ($29) keeps you fresh between washes without stripping moisture.
Fall Hair Care (September - November)
Fall is transition season. The humidity drops, the air gets drier, and your hair starts to shift. This is the best time to repair summer damage before winter makes things worse.
What's Happening to Your Hair
Summer damage is catching up. You might notice more shedding (that's normal and seasonal), dryness, and dullness. Static starts creeping in as humidity drops.
What to Do
- Repair bonds. If you spent the summer in the sun and pool, your hair's bonds need attention. Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector ($34) is the gold standard for at-home bond repair.
- Add oil to your routine. Milk Shake Argan Glistening Oil ($34) adds shine and seals moisture without buildup.
- Switch your color. Fall is the perfect time to go richer and deeper. Book a gloss or toner to add warmth and shine back.
- Get a scalp treatment. Reset your scalp health before winter with a professional treatment at the salon.
Winter Hair Care (December - February)
Winter in North Jersey is rough on hair. The combination of cold outdoor air and dry indoor heat creates a moisture crisis. This is when we see the most breakage at The Warehouse Salon.
What's Happening to Your Hair
Indoor heating sucks moisture from the air and from your hair. Cold air outside constricts the cuticle. Static is constant. Hats cause friction and breakage around the hairline.
What to Do
- Switch to a richer shampoo and conditioner. Shibui Ultra Hydrating Shampoo ($6) and Conditioner ($6) are a great affordable option for extra moisture.
- Deep condition twice a month. Bump up your masking routine. Olaplex No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask ($30) is perfect for this.
- Use a finishing oil. Shibui Replenishing Hair Oil ($24) on the ends helps seal moisture and fight static.
- Line hats with silk or satin. Friction from wool and cotton causes breakage, especially around your hairline and nape. A satin lining prevents that.
The Year-Round Non-Negotiables
No matter the season, these apply:
- Use heat protectant every single time you use hot tools.
- Get regular trims every 8-12 weeks.
- Use sulfate-free shampoo if your hair is color-treated.
- Come in for a professional treatment at least once a quarter.
Your hair's needs change with the seasons, and your routine should too. If you're not sure what adjustments to make, come see us at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield. We'll look at where your hair is right now and build a plan that keeps it healthy all year.
