  • The Secret to Healthy, Shiny Hair: Our Top Picks for the Best Hair Oil Treatments!

    Jul 5, 2024by Brianna Thompson

If you are struggling with dry, dull hair or an itchy, flaky scalp, the right oil treatment can transform your hair. But the key word is right. Slathering your head in pure coconut oil from the grocery store is not the answer. That will leave you with greasy buildup that takes multiple washes to remove. The trick is knowing which oils do what and finding products that deliver those oils in the correct formulation.

I'm Bri, a stylist at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield. I get questions about hair oils constantly because there is so much confusion out there. Some clients avoid oils entirely because they think oils will make their hair greasy. Others go overboard and wonder why their hair looks worse. Let me tell you about a client who figured out the oil thing and completely turned her hair around.

When Your Hair Needs Oil But You Do Not Know Where to Start

A client named Keisha came to me with hair that looked thirsty. She was a 36 year old nurse in East Orange who washed her hair daily because of her job and her hair was paying the price. Dry, dull, breaking at the ends. She had tried oils before but said they made her hair look greasy and weighed down.

"I bought pure coconut oil from the store because everyone says it is amazing for hair," she said. "I left it on overnight and it took three shampoos to get it out. My hair looked worse after."

This is the mistake I see constantly. Pure oils from the grocery store are not formulated for hair. They are too heavy, they do not absorb properly, and they create buildup that suffocates your strands. Professional hair oils are blended with the right concentrations and additional ingredients that help them actually penetrate and benefit your hair without the greasy aftermath.

I put Keisha on a proper oil routine with products designed for hair, not cooking. Within a month, her hair had shine again. The breakage slowed down. She finally understood how oils were supposed to work.

    How Hair Oils Actually Work

Not all oils work the same way on hair. Some oils have small enough molecules to actually penetrate the hair shaft and nourish from within. Others sit on the surface and coat the cuticle, adding shine and protection but not truly absorbing. Both types are useful, but knowing the difference helps you choose the right one for your needs.

Penetrating oils like coconut oil and olive oil can get inside the hair shaft because their molecular structure is small enough to pass through the cuticle. These are great for strengthening and reducing protein loss. Coating oils like argan oil and jojoba oil have larger molecules that stay on the surface, smoothing the cuticle and adding shine without weighing hair down.

Keisha's problem was that she was using a penetrating oil in a way that created buildup instead of absorption. Pure coconut oil is heavy and needs to be used sparingly or in a formulated product. When I explained the difference, she understood why her DIY approach had failed and why the right products made all the difference.

    Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is popular because it contains fatty acids that are easily absorbed by hair, providing deep hydration and nourishment. It is rich in vitamins and antioxidants that promote healthy hair growth and repair damage. Coconut oil also has antifungal and antibacterial properties that help prevent dandruff and scalp infections.

Here is the warning though. Overloading your hair in pure coconut oil is not the answer. It will cause terrible buildup. You need a skin grade coconut oil that is properly formulated for hair. Apira Coconut Oil Treatment is the only product I know that uses skin grade coconut oil with the right amount of amino acids to give your hair what it needs without the greasy mess.

Keisha switched to Apira and uses it as a pre-shampoo treatment once a week. She applies it to her dry hair, lets it sit for 20 minutes, then shampoos out. Her hair absorbs what it needs and the rest washes away cleanly. No more three-shampoo disasters.

    Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is lightweight and similar in composition to the natural oils your scalp produces. This makes it one of the most versatile oils because it does not feel foreign to your hair. It is rich in vitamins and minerals including vitamin E and B-complex vitamins that help strengthen hair and nourish the scalp. Jojoba oil is also a natural emollient, meaning it seals in moisture and prevents dryness and breakage.

Keisha has an oily scalp but dry ends, which is a common combination. Jojoba oil works perfectly for her because it balances the scalp without adding greasiness while still moisturizing her ends. Verb Moringa + Jojoba Treatment Oil is what I recommended. She uses a few drops on her ends after styling and it keeps them hydrated without weighing down her roots.

    Castor Oil

Castor oil is thick and heavy, packed with ricinoleic acid which is an omega-9 fatty acid known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also rich in vitamin E and other nutrients that help strengthen hair and promote healthy growth. Castor oil is a popular choice for those looking to prevent hair breakage and stimulate growth, especially around the hairline and edges.

Keisha had noticed thinning around her temples from years of tight ponytails at work. I suggested she try castor oil specifically on those areas. Keune Care Satin Oil Treatment contains castor oil along with other nourishing ingredients and absorbs better than pure castor oil, which can be too sticky and heavy to use alone.

    Argan Oil

Argan oil is lightweight and rich in antioxidants including vitamin E that help protect hair from damage caused by environmental factors and heat styling. It is a natural moisturizer that hydrates hair and prevents frizz without weighing it down. Argan oil is perfect for restoring shine and vitality to dull hair.

Shiny healthy hair results after using argan oil treatment

This became Keisha's everyday oil. She uses Milk Shake Argan glistering argan oil after every wash to add shine and protect against heat before blow drying. A little goes a long way. She uses about a dime sized amount warmed between her palms and smoothed over her mid-lengths and ends. Her hair went from dull and lifeless to shiny and healthy looking within weeks.

    Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil is versatile with anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties that make it effective for treating dandruff and scalp irritations. It is also believed to stimulate hair growth by improving blood circulation to the scalp and providing nourishment to hair follicles. Rosemary oil is rich in antioxidants that protect hair from damage caused by free radicals.

If you do not like the feel of serums or oils in your hair, you can get rosemary oil benefits through a shampoo instead.  Keisha uses this when her scalp feels irritated or itchy. The rosemary calms everything down without adding any oiliness since it rinses out with the shampoo.

How to Choose the Right Oil for Your Hair

When choosing an oil, consider what your hair actually needs.

Person contemplating hair care choices and which oil to use
    • Dry, damaged hair that needs deep repair: Coconut oil is your best bet because it penetrates and strengthens from within.
    • Oily scalp but dry ends: Jojoba oil balances both without adding greasiness.
    • Stimulate growth or thicken thinning areas: Castor oil targets the follicles.
    • Everyday shine and heat protection: Argan oil is lightweight enough for daily use.
    • Scalp irritation or dandruff: Rosemary oil soothes and treats.

Keisha uses multiple oils now, each for a different purpose. Apira coconut oil once a week as a treatment. Verb jojoba oil on her ends when they feel dry. Keune argan oil after every wash for shine. This layered approach addresses all her concerns without overloading her hair with any single product.

    Your Hair Oil Questions Answered

Can I use grocery store oils on my hair?

You can, but you will probably have the same experience Keisha did. Pure oils from the store are not formulated for hair and often create buildup that is hard to remove. Professional hair oils are blended to absorb properly and deliver benefits without the greasy aftermath.

How often should I use hair oil?

It depends on the oil and your hair type. Lightweight oils like argan can be used daily. Heavier treatments like coconut oil work best once a week. Keisha found her sweet spot through trial and error, and now she has a routine that works without making her hair greasy.

Will oil make my hair look greasy?

Only if you use too much or use the wrong type. Start with less than you think you need. Apply to ends and mid-lengths, avoiding the scalp unless you are doing a treatment that will be washed out. Keisha was using way too much pure coconut oil before. Now she uses small amounts of the right products and her hair looks shiny, not greasy.

Give Your Hair What It Needs

By adding the right oil treatments to your routine, you can prevent dryness, reduce breakage, calm scalp issues, and restore shine. Keisha went from avoiding oils entirely to using them strategically, and her hair has never looked better. The key is understanding what each oil does and using professional products that are formulated to actually work.
