  • What is a Curly Cut and Should You Get One?

    Jul 5, 2024by Brianna Thompson

A curly cut is designed specifically for curly hair, shaped while dry to account for shrinkage and natural curl patterns. Unlike straight cuts that can leave curly hair uneven, frizzy, or shapeless, a curly cut enhances your natural texture, reduces frizz, creates manageable length, and makes daily styling easier because your curls fall into place naturally instead of fighting against the cut.

Hi, I'm Bri, a stylist at The Warehouse Salon in Chatham, NJ. If you have curly hair and you've been getting it cut the same way as someone with straight hair, you've probably noticed the results aren't great. Uneven length, weird shapes, frizz that won't quit. That's because curly hair needs a different approach.

Can the Right Haircut Actually Change How Your Curls Look?

A client named Dani came in last spring ready to give up on her curls entirely. She had thick, 3B curly hair that she'd been straightening for years because she couldn't get it to look right natural.

"Bri, I want to wear my hair curly, but every time I try, it looks like a triangle," she said. "Flat on top, huge at the bottom. And the frizz is out of control. I've tried every product. Nothing works."

"When's the last time you got a haircut specifically for curly hair?" I asked.

She looked confused. "What do you mean? I get haircuts. My stylist always cuts it wet and then blow dries it straight to check the length."

"That's the problem," I said. "Curly hair shrinks when it dries. If someone cuts your hair wet, they can't see how your curls actually fall. They're guessing. And when they blow dry it straight to check, they're looking at hair that's never going to look like that when you wear it curly."

"So how should it be cut?"

"Dry. Curl by curl. I need to see your natural pattern to shape it properly. I need to see where the curls fall, where you need more volume, where the weight is pulling things down. I can't see any of that when your hair is wet or straight."

We did a full curly cut that day. I cut her hair completely dry, working with each curl individually, shaping around her face, removing bulk where it was creating that triangle shape, and adding layers to give her volume on top.

When I finished, she stared at the mirror. "My curls have never looked like this. They're actually bouncy. The shape is even. How is this the same hair?"

Two weeks later, she texted me. "Bri. I haven't straightened my hair once since my appointment. For the first time in years, I actually like my curls. My coworkers keep asking what I did."

A month later: "I used to spend 45 minutes trying to make my curly hair look decent. Now I scrunch in some product and I'm done. This haircut changed everything."

Three months later: "I donated my flat iron. I'm officially a curly girl now. I can't believe I spent years fighting my hair when all I needed was the right cut."

That's what a proper curly cut can do. Here's why it works.

    What Is a Curly Cut?

A curly cut is a haircut designed specifically for curly hair. The stylist cuts your hair while it's dry, in its natural curly state, shaping each curl individually. This is completely different from a traditional wet cut where the stylist combs the hair straight, cuts it wet, and hopes it looks good when it dries.

The goal is to shape your curls while considering your natural curl pattern, texture, and density. Curly hair has a shrinkage factor, which means it looks much shorter when dry than when wet. A stylist who cuts wet hair can't account for this, which is why so many curly-haired people end up with cuts that are way shorter than they wanted.

I personally cut curly hair dry, then tweak any final details after it's diffused and styled. That way I can see exactly how the finished cut will look in real life, not just how it looks wet in the salon chair.

    Enhance Your Natural Curl Pattern

A curly cut shapes your curls to look bouncy, defined, and healthy. It's about working with your unique curl pattern, not against it. The right cut frames your face, creates movement, and lets your curls do what they naturally want to do.

This type of cut is best for people who wear their hair curly most of the time. If you heat style regularly, a curly cut might not be the best choice because it's shaped for your natural texture. But if you're ready to embrace your curls, this cut will make them look better than they ever have.

Why Consider Having a Curly Cut?

    1. Say Goodbye to Frizz

Frizz is one of the biggest complaints I hear from curly-haired clients. A lot of that frizz comes from damaged ends and uneven cutting. When hair is cut wet, the stylist can't see which pieces are damaged or how the curls actually fall. They end up cutting healthy curls and leaving damaged ones.

When I cut dry, I can see exactly where the frizzy, damaged pieces are. I can remove split ends precisely, shape each curl so it falls smoothly, and eliminate the pieces that are causing problems. Dani's frizz improved dramatically after her curly cut because we removed the damage that was contributing to it.

    2. Manageable Length

Curly hair is deceptive when it comes to length. Shrinkage is real, and depending on your curl pattern, your hair might appear 30-50% shorter when dry than when wet. If a stylist cuts your wet hair to shoulder length, it might bounce up to your chin when it dries. That's a nasty surprise.

A curly cut takes shrinkage into account. Because I cut dry, I can see exactly where the length will fall. No surprises. No going home and crying because your hair is four inches shorter than you wanted. What you see in my chair is what you get when you style it at home.

    3. Easy to Style

With the right curly cut, your hair practically styles itself. Your curls fall into place naturally because the cut was designed for exactly how they move. You don't have to fight them or manipulate them to look a certain way.

Dani went from 45 minutes of struggling every morning to scrunching in some product and being done. That's not because she got better at styling. It's because her cut finally worked with her curls instead of against them.

    4. Low Maintenance

Unlike cuts that require daily styling to look right, a curly cut maintains its shape with minimal effort. You don't need to blow dry, flat iron, or spend 30 minutes with a round brush. Your curls hold their shape and volume as long as you have good products for wash day.

    Your Curly Cut Questions Answered

What's the difference between a curly cut and a regular haircut?

A regular haircut is done on wet hair and doesn't account for curl pattern or shrinkage. A curly cut is done on dry hair, curl by curl, so the stylist can see exactly how your curls fall and shape them accordingly.

Will a curly cut work if I sometimes straighten my hair?

Curly cuts are shaped for your natural curl pattern. If you straighten your hair often, the cut might look uneven when straight. This cut is best for people who wear their hair curly most of the time.

How often do I need to get a curly cut?

Most curly-haired clients do well with a cut every 10-12 weeks, but it depends on your hair growth and how well your curls hold their shape. Because curly cuts are designed to grow out gracefully, you can often go longer between appointments than with straight cuts.

My curls are different textures in different areas. Can a curly cut help?

Yes. That's one of the biggest advantages of cutting dry. I can see where your curls are tighter, where they're looser, and shape each section accordingly. Wet cutting treats all your hair the same, which doesn't work when your curl pattern varies.

Will a curly cut fix my triangle head shape?

Usually, yes. Triangle shape happens when there's too much weight at the bottom and not enough volume on top. A curly cut removes bulk strategically and adds layers to create balance. Dani's triangle shape was completely fixed with her first curly cut.

Ready to Actually Love Your Curls?

If you've been fighting your curly hair for years, the problem might not be your curls. It might be how they've been cut. A proper curly cut can change everything - how your hair looks, how long it takes to style, and how you feel about wearing it natural.
