  • Why You Should Book a Haircut with Hair Color Services

    Jul 5, 2024

Getting a haircut at the same appointment as your color service removes damaged ends before coloring, saves product by cutting first, allows your stylist to balance length and color together, and saves you time by combining two services into one visit. It's more efficient for you and produces better results than scheduling them separately.

Here at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ, we work with clients from Wayne, Montclair, Parsippany, West Caldwell, and all across North Jersey on exactly this topic.

I'm Bri, a stylist at The Warehouse Salon in Chatham, NJ. When clients book color without a haircut, I always ask when they last had a trim. If it's been a while, I recommend combining the two. Here's why that matters more than you might think.

Does It Really Make a Difference?

A client named Rachel came in last spring for balayage. She hadn't had a haircut in about four months, but she only wanted color that day. She figured she'd come back for a trim later.

"I just want to freshen up my blonde," she said. "I'll schedule a haircut for next month."

I looked at her ends. They were dry, split, and visibly damaged from months of heat styling. The last two inches of her hair were in rough shape.

"Here's the thing," I said. "If I color your hair today without cutting it, I'm going to spend product and time on ends that you're just going to cut off next month anyway. And those damaged ends won't hold color as well as healthy hair. You'll get better results if we trim first."

She hesitated. "But I don't want to lose length."

"We're talking about an inch, maybe an inch and a half. The damaged part. Your hair will actually look longer and fuller without those scraggly ends weighing it down. And the color will look better because it's going on healthy hair."

She agreed to add the haircut. I trimmed off the damage first, then did her balayage. When I finished, she looked at the mirror.

"Okay, you were right. My hair looks thicker. And the blonde looks so much brighter than last time."

Two weeks later, she texted me. "Bri. My color is lasting longer than it usually does. Is that because of the haircut?"

"Partly," I replied. "Healthy hair holds color better. Damaged ends are porous, so they absorb color unevenly and fade faster."

A month later: "I can't believe I used to schedule these separately. It makes so much more sense to do them together. And I saved a trip to the salon."

That's why I recommend combining these services whenever possible. Here's the breakdown.

    Preserving Hair Integrity

Damaged hair doesn't hold color well. Split ends, breakage, and dry, porous strands absorb color unevenly and fade faster than healthy hair. If you're putting fresh color on damaged ends, you're not getting the full benefit of the service.

By trimming before coloring, you remove the weakest, most damaged parts of your hair. The color goes on healthy strands that can actually hold it. Your results look better and last longer. Rachel's color lasted noticeably longer after we started cutting before coloring, and that wasn't a coincidence.

    Balancing Length and Color

When I can see your cut and your color together, I can make better decisions about both. The way color falls through layers matters. The way highlights frame your face depends on where your hair sits after it's cut. If I color first and you cut later with someone else, those pieces might not line up the way they should.

Doing both in the same appointment lets me coordinate. I can place highlights where they'll show after the cut. I can blend color through layers intentionally. The length and the color work together instead of being two separate things that happen to be on the same head.

    Saving Color, Saving Money

Color products aren't cheap. If I apply color to four inches of hair and you cut two inches off next week, that's product that went straight in the trash. You paid for color on hair that's now on the salon floor.

I prefer to cut first, then color. That way, every bit of product goes on hair you're actually keeping. You get the full value of your color service, and I'm not wasting materials on ends that are about to be trimmed anyway.

This is especially true for highlights and balayage, where placement matters. If you cut after coloring, you might cut off some of your brightest pieces. If we cut first, I can place the color knowing exactly where your hair will fall.

    Customizing the Look

Sometimes color alone isn't enough to get the look you want. Shape, volume, and dimension come from the cut. If you're going for a specific style, the cut and color need to work together.

When we do both in the same appointment, I can ask what you're going for and build the whole look at once. Want more volume on top? I can cut layers there and place highlights to enhance them. Want your face framed a certain way? I can cut the pieces and color them together. The result is a complete, cohesive look instead of two separate services that may or may not complement each other.

    Timesaving and Convenience

Two separate appointments means two trips to the salon, two chunks of time blocked off, two rounds of scheduling. Combining them into one visit is just more practical. You're already in the chair. You're already at the salon. Get everything done at once.

Rachel used to come in for color, then schedule a separate haircut appointment a few weeks later. Now she does both together and saves herself an extra trip every couple of months. Over a year, that adds up to real time saved.

Your Questions About Combining Cut and Color

Should the haircut come before or after the color?

I prefer cutting first, then coloring. This way I'm not wasting product on hair that's about to be cut off, and I can place color knowing exactly where your hair will fall. Some stylists do it differently, but this is my approach.

Will the appointment take a lot longer?

It adds some time, but not as much as you'd think. A trim adds maybe 15-20 minutes to your color appointment. And it's still faster than coming back for a separate visit.

What if I just got a haircut recently?

If your ends are healthy and you're happy with your length, you might not need a cut. I'll look at your hair and let you know. But if it's been more than 8-10 weeks or your ends are showing damage, I'll recommend adding a trim.

    Does this cost more?

You're paying for two services, so yes, the single appointment costs more than color alone. But you're also saving money by not wasting color on hair you'll cut off later, and you're saving the cost of a separate appointment. For most people, it works out better financially to combine them.

Can I just get a trim, not a full haircut?

Absolutely. Sometimes all you need is a dusting to remove split ends. I'll assess your hair and recommend what makes sense. The goal is healthy hair that holds color well, not cutting more than necessary.
