What to Consider Before Coloring Your Hair

By Brianna Thompson, Stylist at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ

Your current hair condition, the color you want, how much maintenance you can handle, your budget, and your work environment. Those five factors determine whether a color change will be a success or a regret. Skipping any of them leads to surprises you don't want.

I've seen clients come in with a photo of icy platinum blonde, not realizing their dark, previously-colored hair would need multiple sessions and serious aftercare to get there. I've also seen clients go dramatically darker without thinking about how it would look growing out. Let's make sure you go into your color appointment fully prepared.

    1. Your Hair's Current Condition

This is where everything starts. If your hair is already damaged from previous color, heat, or chemical treatments, jumping into more processing can push it past the point of repair. We always assess the condition of your hair before recommending any color service.

If your hair needs strengthening first, we'll usually suggest a round of Olaplex No. 0 and No. 3 treatments before coloring. Starting with a strong foundation makes a huge difference in how the color turns out and how your hair holds up long-term.

    2. The Color You Want vs. What's Realistic

Instagram and Pinterest photos are great for inspiration, but they don't always reflect what's possible for your specific hair. Going from very dark to very light takes multiple sessions. Red is beautiful but fades the fastest. Vivid colors require pre-lightening and constant maintenance.

When you come in for a consultation at our Fairfield, NJ salon, we'll be honest about what your hair can handle and how many sessions it will take. We'd rather set realistic expectations than overpromise and underdeliver.

    3. Maintenance Commitment

Every hair color requires maintenance, but some require a lot more than others. High-contrast highlights need touch-ups every 6 to 8 weeks. Vivids can fade within weeks without proper care. All-over color looks best with touch-ups every 4 to 6 weeks.

Before you decide, be honest with yourself about how often you're willing to come in. If you're looking for something lower-maintenance, techniques like balayage or face-framing highlights can give you dimension without the frequent upkeep.

    4. Home Care Products

The products you use at home directly impact how long your color lasts and how healthy your hair stays. Color-treated hair needs sulfate-free shampoo, regular conditioning, and color-protecting products.

For our color clients, we typically recommend:

    5. Budget

Hair color is an investment, and it's important to know the full picture before you start. The initial service is just the beginning. Factor in maintenance appointments, professional products, and any corrective work if things don't go as planned. We always give our clients a clear breakdown of what to expect cost-wise so there are no surprises.

    6. Your Lifestyle and Environment

Do you swim? Spend a lot of time outdoors? Use heat tools daily? These all affect how your color holds up. Living in North Jersey means dealing with humidity in summer and dry, cold air in winter, both of which can impact color longevity. We factor your lifestyle into our recommendations so your color works for your actual life, not just for the day you leave the salon.

    7. The Consultation Is Everything

The best color results always start with a consultation. Come in with your inspiration photos, be open about your budget and maintenance preferences, and let us give you honest feedback about what's possible. We want you to love your color, and that starts with getting on the same page before we mix anything.
