Ways To Style Long Hair
Beach waves, classic blowouts, braids, half-up half-down, ponytails, straight and sleek, and top knots. Long hair gives you more styling options than any other length, which is both a blessing and overwhelming. Once you master a few core techniques, you can switch up your look every day without much effort.

The trick with long hair is learning what works for your texture and lifestyle. A style that takes your coworker five minutes might take you thirty if your hair is different. I help clients find their go-to looks so they're not standing in front of the mirror frustrated every morning.
I'm Bri, a stylist at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield. I work with long hair constantly, and I've taught countless clients how to actually style it themselves at home. Let me tell you about one who went from wearing the same boring ponytail every day to having a rotation of looks she loved.

What Happens When You Only Know One Style?
A client named Grace came to me feeling stuck. She was a corporate attorney in Morristown with beautiful waist-length hair that she wore in a low ponytail literally every single day. She'd had long hair for years but had no idea how to style it any other way.
"Bri, I'm so bored with my hair," she said. "I grew it out because I wanted options, but I just end up putting it in the same ponytail because I don't know what else to do with it."
I asked her what she'd tried. She said she'd attempted curling it once but it took an hour and fell flat within two hours. She'd tried a braid but felt like it looked "too casual" for court. She didn't know how to do a blowout that lasted more than a day.
"Grace, you have gorgeous hair and you're using maybe 10% of its potential," I told her. "Let me show you six styles you can do in under 15 minutes that will work for your life."
We spent an hour together while I taught her different techniques. She practiced each one and took notes on her phone. By the time she left, she had a whole week's worth of looks planned.
A month later she texted me: "I haven't worn the same hairstyle twice this week. People at work keep asking if I got extensions because my hair looks so different."
Three months later: "I actually look forward to doing my hair now. It used to be a chore. Now it's fun."
Here's what I taught her.
Beach Waves or Curls

Beach waves create that relaxed, effortless look that works for everything from brunch to date night. Grace's first attempt at curls failed because she was wrapping every strand the same direction and using too much heat. The curls looked uniform and fake, then dropped out because her hair was too heavy.
The trick is alternating curl directions and leaving the ends out. Separate your hair into sections, curl each one in a different direction, and don't curl all the way to the tips. When you're done, brush through gently to break up the curls into natural-looking waves.
A salt spray adds texture and helps the waves hold longer. Grace's hair went from falling flat in two hours to lasting all day once she learned the right technique. She wears beach waves at least twice a week now.
Classic Blowout
A classic blowout is versatile enough for workdays, nights out, or just feeling polished on a Tuesday. You can make it smooth and sleek or bouncy and voluminous depending on your technique. Grace wanted a blowout she could do herself that would last multiple days.
Use a blow dryer and round brush, lifting at the roots for volume or pulling downward for smoothness. For extra bounce, pin each section after you dry it and let it cool before releasing. Velcro rollers or hot rollers at the crown give you that salon-level volume.
Grace learned to do a blowout on Sunday night that lasts until Wednesday. She refreshes it with dry shampoo and sleeps with her hair in a loose bun to preserve the style. That alone cut her weekly styling time in half.
Braids

Braids are classic for a reason, and there are so many variations to choose from. A simple three-strand braid works for everyday, while fishtail braids and French braids look more polished for formal occasions. Grace thought braids were too casual for court until I showed her how to make them look elegant.
The key is pancaking the braid after you finish. Gently pull on each section to widen it and make it look fuller and more intentional. A loose, pancaked braid pinned into a low bun looks sophisticated enough for any courtroom.
Grace now wears braids on days when she doesn't have time to style but still needs to look put-together. She does a French braid in under five minutes and gets compliments from colleagues who assume it took much longer.
Half-Up Half-Down

The half-up half-down style shows off your long hair while keeping it out of your face. It's practical and pretty, which is why it's one of the most popular looks for long hair. Grace started doing this when she wanted something more interesting than a ponytail but didn't have time for waves.
Gather the top half of your hair and secure it with a hair tie or claw clip. You can leave the bottom half down straight, or add waves or curls for more dimension. A claw clip gives it a more relaxed, trendy vibe while a clear elastic keeps it sleek.
Grace wears this style for depositions because it looks professional but still shows off her length. She sometimes adds a twist before securing the top section to make it more interesting. It takes her three minutes and always looks intentional.
Ponytail

A ponytail might seem basic, but there are so many ways to improve it. Grace was wearing the same low ponytail every day because she didn't realize how many variations existed. Once I showed her the options, she started rotating through different ponytail styles.
Try a high ponytail for sleek and polished, or a low ponytail for relaxed elegance. Add a braid wrapped around the elastic, or try a bubble ponytail with multiple elastics for volume and texture. Wrapping a small section of hair around the elastic hides it and makes any ponytail look more finished.
Grace's favorite is the bubble ponytail because it looks complicated but takes five minutes. She gets asked how she did it almost every time she wears it. Sometimes the simplest styles just need a small twist to become interesting.
Straight and Sleek

If you want a polished, sophisticated look, nothing beats straight and sleek long hair. This style works for big meetings, formal events, or any time you want to look put together. Grace wears this for important court appearances because it reads as serious and professional.
Use a flat iron to straighten your hair and apply a small amount of serum to keep it shiny and frizz-free. If your hair is curly or wavy, blow dry it smooth first before flat ironing for the best results. Work in small sections and don't rush.
The key is a good heat protectant and not over-ironing. Grace used to go over the same section multiple times, which caused damage. I taught her one slow pass is better than three fast ones. Her hair stays healthier and the style lasts longer.
Top Knot

A top knot is chic and practical, perfect for days when you're in a rush or your hair needs a refresh. Gather your hair into a high ponytail, twist it around, and secure with a hair tie. Done in under a minute.
You can leave some strands loose around your face for a softer look, or slick everything back for a more polished vibe. Adding a little texture spray before you put it up gives the knot more grip and makes it look fuller.
Grace wears a top knot on the days between washes or when she's running late. It hides day-three hair and still looks intentional. She used to feel embarrassed wearing her hair up because she thought it meant she "gave up," but now she sees it as just another style in her rotation.
Your Long Hair Styling Questions Answered
How do I make my curls last longer?
Let them cool completely before touching them, use a light-hold hairspray, and don't brush through too much. Grace's curls used to fall flat in hours because she was brushing them out immediately. Now she lets them set for 10 minutes and they last all day.
What products do I need for styling long hair?
A heat protectant, a texture spray, a light serum, and a flexible hairspray will cover most styles. Grace keeps all four in her bathroom and uses different combinations depending on what she's doing. You don't need a cabinet full of products.
How do I keep my hair healthy with all this styling?
Use heat protectant every time, don't use maximum heat settings, and give your hair breaks from heat when you can. Grace alternates heat styles with braids and ponytails so she's not using hot tools every day. A weekly deep conditioning treatment helps too.
What if I'm bad at styling my own hair?
Practice. Grace felt hopeless when we started, but after a few weeks of trying each style, she got faster and better. Watch tutorials, practice on weekends when you have time, and don't give up after one attempt.
