Unraveling HairTok: Which Trends Actually Work and Which to Skip

By Brianna Thompson, Stylist at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ

TikTok hair hacks are everywhere, but most of them are either useless or flat-out damaging if you do them wrong. I've been behind the chair long enough to know which viral tricks are worth your time and which ones will have you sitting in my chair asking me to fix the damage.

Let me break down the most popular HairTok trends and give you the honest truth about each one.

Rosemary Water for Hair Growth: WORTH TRYING

This one has some real science behind it. Rosemary has been shown to stimulate blood flow to the scalp, which can support hair growth. The TikTok version (steeping rosemary in water and spraying it on your scalp) is a simplified version, but it's not going to hurt you.

That said, if you're dealing with actual thinning, rosemary water alone isn't going to cut it. For real results, pair it with a proven thickening product like Zenagen Revolve Women's Thickening Shampoo or the Zenagen Densifying Hair Serum. These are formulated with clinical-grade ingredients that do more than a DIY spray can.

The T-Shirt Towel Method: YES, DO THIS

Using a cotton t-shirt instead of a terry cloth towel to dry your hair is one of the few TikTok hacks I actually recommend to my clients. Terry cloth is rough and creates friction that lifts the cuticle and causes frizz, especially on curly and wavy hair. A t-shirt or microfiber towel is much gentler. It's free, it works, and there's no downside.

Upside-Down Blow Drying for Volume: WORKS, BUT BE CAREFUL

Flipping your head upside down and blow drying does create root volume. But if you do it too aggressively or without a heat protectant, you're asking for damage and tangles. Use a medium heat setting, always apply Milk Shake Lifestyling Thermo-Protector first, and don't spend more than a few minutes upside down.

For even better volume results, try a volumizing mousse like Shibui Volumizing Mousse at the roots before blow drying. You'll get lift that lasts all day.

    Rice Water Rinses: SKIP IT

The rice water trend claims to strengthen and grow hair faster. While rice water does contain some amino acids, the concentration is too low to make a meaningful difference. Worse, the starch can build up on your scalp and actually clog follicles if you use it too often. Stick with actual protein treatments when your hair needs strengthening.

    Overnight Oiling: PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Coating your hair in coconut oil and sleeping with it overnight sounds nourishing, but for many hair types, it causes more problems than it solves. Coconut oil can actually be too heavy and create buildup that's hard to wash out. A better approach is using a lightweight oil like Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil in small amounts on damp hair after washing.

Diffusing Curls Upside Down: YES, WITH TECHNIQUE

If you have curly hair, diffusing upside down creates bounce and definition. But the details matter. Don't keep moving the diffuser around. Cup your curls into the diffuser, hold still, and let the heat do its work. Low to medium heat, and keep the speed low to avoid blowing curls apart. The Oligo Curl Balm applied to soaking wet hair before diffusing gives incredible definition.

DIY Hair Masks with Kitchen Ingredients: MOSTLY SKIP

Eggs, avocado, mayonnaise. I've heard it all. While these ingredients aren't harmful in theory, they're messy, unpredictable, and nowhere near as effective as professional treatments. If you want a real deep conditioning experience, use something like Keratin Complex Vanilla Bean Deep Conditioner instead. Your hair (and your shower drain) will thank you.

    The Bottom Line on HairTok

Not every trend is worth the hype. A 15-second video can't replace the knowledge your stylist has from years of training and experience. Before you try the next viral hack, ask yourself: does this person actually know what they're talking about, or did they just get a lot of views?

If you're ever unsure about a trend, bring it up at your next appointment at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ. We'll tell you honestly whether it's worth trying or worth skipping. You can also follow me on Instagram @themanebri for real talk on hair trends.
