The One Summer Hair Mistake Everyone Makes (and How to Fix It Fast)
Here's the Mistake (and Yes, You're Probably Making It)
We're going to get right to it. The number one summer hair mistake we see at The Warehouse Salon? Over-washing. It sounds too simple to be the real answer, but it is. Every single summer, clients from Fairfield, NJ, and all over North Jersey come in with dry, frizzy, faded hair, and when we ask about their routine, the answer is almost always the same: "I've been washing my hair every day because it's so hot and sweaty."
We get it. Nobody wants to feel gross. But daily washing during summer is doing more damage than you realize, and fixing it is easier than you'd think.
Why Over-Washing Wrecks Your Hair
Every time you shampoo, you strip natural oils from your scalp and hair. Those oils are there for a reason. They protect the strand, keep moisture locked in, and help your cuticle lie flat (which is what makes hair look shiny instead of dull). When you wash daily in the summer, you're removing that protective layer over and over. Your scalp responds by producing even more oil to compensate, which makes you feel like you need to wash again. It's a cycle that leads to oily roots, dry ends, and color that fades in half the time.
Jessica always tells clients: "Your hair can handle a day or two without a wash, even in the summer." And she's right.
What to Do Instead
Aim for washing every two to three days. On the off days, use a good dry shampoo to absorb oil and keep things fresh. The Oligo Dry Shampoo is one of our favorites because it doesn't leave white residue and actually adds a little volume while it soaks up oil. Spray it at the roots before bed and wake up with hair that looks freshly washed.
When you do wash, use a shampoo that's gentle enough for frequent-ish use but still actually cleans. The Lakme Teknia Organic Balance Shampoo is a great option. It's sulfate-free, pH balanced, and it won't strip your color or leave your hair feeling squeaky.
Replace the Lost Moisture
Even when you cut back on washing, summer is still brutal on moisture. Sun, wind, chlorine, air conditioning, all of it pulls hydration out of your hair. A weekly deep treatment makes a huge difference. The Milk Shake Intensive Treatment Integrity is what Monroe recommends for most hair types. Leave it on for 5-10 minutes in the shower and your hair will feel completely different after.
Between washes, a lightweight leave-in like the Shibui Everything Spray keeps your ends from getting crunchy. It's a multi-benefit spray that detangles, adds shine, and protects against UV without feeling heavy.
Bonus Tips from the Chair
A couple more things our team mentions all summer long:
- Rinse your hair with cold water after washing. It closes the cuticle and locks in moisture.
- Skip the blow dryer when you can. Air drying in the summer saves your hair from unnecessary heat damage.
- If you swim, always rinse with clean water before and after. It makes a massive difference.
- Wear a hat or scarf at the beach. Sun protection isn't just for your skin.
Dan and Patricia see the results of over-washing every single July and August. Clients from Wayne, Montclair, Parsippany, and right here in Fairfield come in wondering why their hair looks so rough, and the fix is almost always the same: wash less, condition more, protect daily.
It's a Simple Fix with Big Results
You don't need to overhaul your entire routine. Just pull back on how often you're shampooing and replace that habit with a good dry shampoo and a solid Olaplex No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner when you do wash. Your hair, your color, and your wallet will all thank you.
