The Biggest Haircare Myths Stylists Want You to Stop Believing
By Rona Reyes, Stylist at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ
After years behind the chair, I've heard every haircare myth in the book. Clients come in repeating things they saw on TikTok, read in a magazine ten years ago, or heard from their mom. Some of these myths are harmless. Others are actively damaging your hair. Let me set the record straight on the ones I hear the most.
Myth 1: Cutting Your Hair Makes It Grow Faster
This one refuses to die. Trimming your hair doesn't affect the growth rate at your scalp. Hair grows from the root, not the ends. What regular trims DO is prevent split ends from traveling up the shaft and causing breakage, which makes your hair look and feel healthier. If you're trying to grow your hair out, trims every 8 to 12 weeks are still important. Just tell your stylist you're in growth mode so they only take off what's necessary.
Myth 2: You Should Brush Your Hair 100 Strokes a Day
Please don't. This advice might have made sense a hundred years ago when people washed their hair once a month and needed to distribute natural oils. Today, aggressive brushing just creates friction, leads to breakage, and irritates your scalp. Brush gently, only when you need to detangle, and use the right tool. A wide-tooth comb or wet brush works way better than a boar bristle brush for most hair types.
Myth 3: Cold Water Makes Your Hair Shinier
The theory is that cold water closes the cuticle and locks in shine. In reality, the temperature change is so minimal that it doesn't make a meaningful difference. What DOES make your hair shiny is using the right products. A finishing serum like Milk Shake No Frizz Glistening Serum or a lightweight oil like Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil will do more for shine than any cold rinse ever could.
Myth 4: Switching Shampoos Regularly Is Better for Your Hair
Your hair doesn't "get used to" a shampoo. This myth probably started because people noticed their shampoo wasn't working as well over time, but that's usually because of product buildup, not tolerance. Using a clarifying shampoo like Shibui Clarifying Shampoo once a month clears out buildup and makes your regular shampoo work like new again.
Myth 5: Air Drying Is Always Better Than Blow Drying
This one surprises people. Air drying isn't automatically healthier. When hair stays wet for a long time, the water causes the hair shaft to swell and contract, which can actually weaken it over time. A blow dryer on medium heat with a good thermal protectant like Milk Shake Lifestyling Thermo-Protector is often gentler than letting your hair air dry for hours. The key is never using high heat without protection.
Myth 6: Natural or Organic Products Are Always Better
I love clean beauty, but "natural" doesn't automatically mean "effective" or even "safe." Some natural ingredients can cause allergic reactions, and some synthetic ingredients are perfectly fine for your hair. What matters is the formulation, not the marketing. We carry brands at The Warehouse Salon that balance clean ingredients with proven performance, so you don't have to choose between the two.
Myth 7: You Don't Need Conditioner If Your Hair Is Oily
Oily roots and dry ends are incredibly common, especially here in North Jersey. Skipping conditioner doesn't fix oily hair. It just makes your ends dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. The trick is to condition from mid-length to ends only, keeping it off your roots. The Aluram Moisturizing Conditioner is lightweight enough for oily hair types while still giving your ends the moisture they need.
