Summer Hair Doesn't Have to Be High Maintenance

Every year when Memorial Day hits, we start getting the same question at The Warehouse Salon: "How do I keep my hair looking good when I'm at the pool every weekend, sweating through workouts, and basically living outside?" It's a fair question. And the answer isn't "just throw it in a bun and give up."

We work with clients across Fairfield, NJ, and the surrounding North Jersey area who want to enjoy summer without their hair falling apart. Jessica and Monroe have put together some go-to routines that actually work for real people with real schedules.

Build a Routine Around What Summer Throws at You

The key is switching your routine before damage happens, not after. If you know you're going to be in the pool, at the beach, or sweating through outdoor activities, your hair care needs to change. You wouldn't wear winter clothes in July, so don't use your winter hair routine either.

Start with a good moisture-based shampoo and conditioner. The Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Shampoo and Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Conditioner are perfect for this because they load your hair up with hydration without making it heavy or greasy. Summer strips moisture constantly, so you need to put it back.

    Chlorine and Salt Water Protection

Before you get in the pool, wet your hair with clean water first. This is the single best trick we share with clients. When your hair is already saturated, it absorbs way less chlorine and salt. Follow up by applying a leave-in protector like the Shibui Peptide Primer Leave-In Treatment. It creates a light shield that helps block chemical absorption.

After swimming, don't just let the chlorine sit. Rinse it out as soon as you can. If you're at a pool party and can't wash your hair right away, at the very least run clean water through it. When you do get home, use a clarifying wash once a week. The Shibui Clarifying Shampoo pulls out buildup, chlorine residue, and mineral deposits without over-stripping.

    The Sweat Factor

Sweating at the gym or just being outside in the humidity doesn't mean you need to wash your hair every single day. Over-washing is one of the biggest summer mistakes. It dries out your scalp, strips your color, and makes your hair produce more oil to compensate.

Instead, use a dry shampoo between washes. The IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo absorbs oil and sweat while actually detoxing your scalp. It's not just masking the problem, it's helping clean things up. Spray it at the roots, give it a minute to absorb, then tousle and go.

    Styling That Survives the Heat

If you're the kind of person who wants to look put-together even at a barbecue, go with a flexible hold product that moves with you instead of locking things in place. The Milk Shake Lifestyling Free Hand Paste gives you texture and control without crunchiness. It works on short or long hair, wet or dry.

For those with wavy or curly hair, embrace it during summer. Let your natural texture do the work. A curl-enhancing spray or leave-in will define your waves without fighting the humidity. You'll spend less time styling and your hair will be healthier for it.

Plan Ahead and You'll Thank Yourself

The clients who come through our doors in Fairfield, Caldwell, and across North Jersey looking amazing all summer are the ones who set up their routine in late May. Don't wait until your hair is fried in August. Come see us, let Ann or Patricia help you pick the right products, and set yourself up for a low-maintenance summer.
