K18 vs. Olaplex vs. Kérastase Bond Builders: Which One Does Your Hair Actually Need?

Someone comes in for a color correction and asks which bond builder we use, and the answer is: it depends on what your hair is doing. We carry K18, Olaplex, and Kérastase Fusio-Dose bond-building treatments at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, and we do not rotate them. Each one does a different job. Knowing which one belongs in your routine starts with understanding what damaged the hair in the first place and what part of the strand needs repair.

What bond builders actually do

Bond builders work on the disulfide bonds inside the hair cortex. Chemical services (lightening, permanent color, relaxers, Japanese straightening) break those bonds to change the structure of the hair, and broken bonds mean weaker hair, breakage, and a rougher cuticle. A bond builder reconnects them. The difference between K18, Olaplex, and Kérastase is when they work, how deeply they penetrate, and what kind of damage they target.

K18 works during the 4-minute leave-in window, reconnects peptide chains at the molecular level, and is the fastest reversal option we have for compromised ends that need immediate reinforcement. Olaplex works during processing and prevents breakage before it happens, which is why we add it to every lift over level 7. Kérastase Fusio-Dose works on multiple bond types (not just disulfide) and is the call when someone has layered damage from heat, mechanical stress, and chemical services stacked over months.

When we use K18

K18 is the repair-after-the-fact option. If you are sitting in our chair with fried ends from a box dye disaster, or you have been flat-ironing bleached hair every day and the texture feels like straw, K18 is what we reach for first. The peptide formula penetrates to the cortex, reconnects broken keratin chains, and you feel the difference in four minutes. It does not require rinsing, it does not weigh the hair down, and it works on hair that Olaplex could not save because the damage happened after the service was done.

We use it most often on blonde transformations where the client is coming in with pre-lightened hair that has lost elasticity. The move-up appointment is where breakage shows up, and K18 applied before we tone gives us a better base to work from. Clients also take the retail bottle home and use it between appointments as a leave-in treatment, which keeps the integrity stable while the blonde grows out.

The retail bottle lasts about 6 to 8 applications depending on hair length and density. You apply it to towel-dried hair, leave it for 4 minutes, do not rinse, and style as normal. It does not replace conditioner but it does replace most of the bond-repair masks on the market.

When we use Olaplex

Olaplex is a processing additive, not a post-service fix. We add Olaplex No.1 directly into the lightener bowl during any service that lifts the hair past level 7, and we follow it with No.2 as a rinse-out treatment before the gloss. The chemistry prevents the disulfide bonds from breaking in the first place, which means less damage during the lift and stronger hair when you leave.

If you are doing a full highlight, a foilyage, or a color correction that requires multiple lifts, Olaplex is non-negotiable. It does not reverse damage that already happened, but it stops new damage from happening during the appointment. Clients who skip it end up with more breakage, rougher ends, and a longer grow-out before we can lift again.

The retail line (No.3, No.4, No.5, No.6, No.7) is maintenance, not repair. No.3 is the at-home bond builder you use once a week on dry hair before you shampoo. It works, but it works slowly. If your hair is already compromised, No.3 alone will not fix it. You need the in-salon No.1 and No.2 first, and then you use No.3 to maintain the result.

When we use Kérastase Fusio-Dose

Kérastase Fusio-Dose is the multi-bond option. It works on disulfide bonds, hydrogen bonds, and ionic bonds, which makes it the right call when the damage is not just chemical. If you have been heat-styling color-treated hair, wearing tight ponytails, or using a flat iron on wet hair, the breakage is coming from multiple sources and Olaplex will not address all of it.

We customize the Fusio-Dose treatment in the bowl. The concentrates (Homeolabs for bond repair, Vita-Ciment for surface strengthening) get mixed with a booster based on your hair type, and the treatment sits for 5 to 10 minutes under heat before we rinse and style. It is heavier than K18, more comprehensive than Olaplex, and the best option for clients who need both bond repair and cuticle smoothing in one step.

The retail version is the Resistance line, which includes the Extentioniste shampoo and conditioner for length retention and the Ciment Thermique heat protectant. If you are growing out a short cut or trying to recover from breakage, the Extentioniste lineup works faster than most salon lines because it targets breakage at the mid-lengths, not just the ends.

The decision tree we use

If your hair is chemically over-processed and the ends feel gummy or snap when wet: K18.

If you are about to lighten your hair and you want to prevent breakage during the service: Olaplex No.1 and No.2 added to the color bowl.

If your hair is damaged from a combination of heat, tension, and chemical services and needs a reset: Kérastase Fusio-Dose.

If you are maintaining healthy hair and want to keep it that way: Olaplex No.3 at home once a week, or the Kérastase Resistance shampoo and conditioner in your regular rotation.

At home, you can use Olaplex No.3 once a week and K18 as needed between washes. They work on the same bonds but at different stages, so there is no conflict.

How often should I use K18 at home? It depends on how damaged your hair is. If you are recovering from a color correction or a bad lift, use it after every wash for the first two weeks, then taper to once or twice a week as the hair stabilizes. If your hair is in good shape and you are just maintaining, once a week is enough. The bottle will last longer if you apply it only to the mid-lengths and ends, not the roots.

Does Kérastase Fusio-Dose work on color-treated hair? Yes. The Homeolabs concentrate is specifically formulated for chemically treated hair, and we use it on every blonde client who also heat-styles regularly. It does not strip color, it does not interfere with toner, and it works under a gloss. If you are maintaining vivid color or a money piece and you need bond repair, Fusio-Dose is safer than most bond builders because it does not swell the cuticle as aggressively.

Which one should I buy if I can only afford one? If your hair is already damaged: K18. If you are about to get a chemical service and you want to protect your hair during the appointment: ask your stylist to add Olaplex to the bowl and buy the No.3 bottle to use at home. If your hair is damaged from heat and mechanical stress, not just chemical services: start with the Kérastase Resistance shampoo and conditioner, and add the Fusio-Dose treatment in the salon every 4 to 6 weeks.

Can I use these if I have extensions? K18 and Olaplex are both safe on hand-tied and tape-in extensions as long as you apply them mid-shaft to ends and avoid the attachment points. The Kérastase Resistance line is extension-safe but skip the Fusio-Dose in-salon treatment near the wefts because the heat can loosen the adhesive on tape-ins. If you have extensions and you need bond repair, K18 is the cleanest option.
