  • How to Sleep with Long Hair to Prevent Breakage

    Mar 7, 2025by sofia montella

Long, flowing hair is beautiful, but keeping it healthy requires extra care, especially while you sleep. Tossing and turning at night can lead to friction, tangles, and breakage, making it really important to adopt a protective nighttime hair routine. Here's how you can wake up with smooth, damage-free locks.

At The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ, we work with a lot of clients who are growing their hair out or maintaining long extensions. And one of the first things we talk about is what they're doing at night. It makes more of a difference than most people realize.

    1. Use a Silk or Satin Pillowcase

This is the single easiest change you can make, and it has the biggest impact. Cotton pillowcases create friction that roughs up the hair cuticle, leading to frizz, tangles, and breakage overnight.

Silk or satin pillowcases let your hair glide as you move. Less friction means less damage. We recommend this to every long-haired client who walks through our Fairfield salon doors.

    2. Try a Loose Protective Style

Never sleep with your hair loose and down. It's a tangle trap. Instead, try one of these:

    • Loose braid: A single loose braid keeps hair contained without creating tension. Don't braid too tight or you'll get kinks.
    • Pineapple bun: For curly or wavy hair, gather your hair in a very loose, high ponytail using a silk scrunchie. This preserves your curl pattern overnight.
    • Loose twist: Two loose twists (one on each side) work great for preventing tangles while keeping things comfortable.

The key word is loose. Tight styles create tension at the roots that can actually cause breakage and traction damage over time.

    3. Apply a Leave-In Treatment Before Bed

Your hair repairs itself while you sleep (just like your skin), so nighttime is actually the best time to apply a leave-in treatment. Here's what we recommend:

    • Shibui Replenishing Hair Oil ($24) - A few drops on the ends seals moisture in and prevents dryness. It's lightweight enough that it won't stain your pillowcase.
    • Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil ($32) - If your hair is damaged or color-treated, this one does double duty. It repairs bonds while adding shine and softness.
    • Milk Shake Leave-In Conditioner ($28) - Great for detangling before bed. Apply through mid-lengths and ends.

    4. Use the Right Hair Ties

Elastic hair ties with metal clasps are the worst thing for long hair. They grip, pull, and snap. Switch to:

    • Silk scrunchies (less friction)
    • Spiral coil ties (less tension)
    • Claw clips for a loose twist-up

We can't tell you how many clients come to our Fairfield salon with breakage around their hairline from bad hair ties. It's one of the most common causes of unnecessary damage.

    5. Don't Go to Bed with Wet Hair

Wet hair is at its most fragile. Sleeping on wet hair leads to friction damage (because wet hair stretches and snaps more easily), and it can also cause scalp issues from the moisture trapped against your head all night.

If you wash at night, blow dry at least 80% before bed. Use a heat protectant like Milk Shake Lifestyling Thermo-Protector ($26) to minimize heat damage from the dryer.

    6. Brush Before Bed (the Right Way)

Gentle detangling before bed prevents those gnarly morning tangles. Start from the ends and work your way up. Never rip a brush through from root to tip.

Apply a small amount of Amika Hydro Rush Leave-In Conditioner ($31) as a detangler before brushing. It makes the process smoother and adds overnight moisture.

    The Morning Difference

Clients who adopt these nighttime habits consistently tell us the same thing: less tangles, less breakage, softer hair in the morning, and fewer bad hair days overall. It's a small investment of time that pays off big.

If you're growing your hair out or dealing with breakage, come see us at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ. We'll assess your hair health and build a plan that works for your routine, day and night.
