Frizz Isn't Just a Summer Problem, and You Might Be Making It Worse

If you've been blaming summer humidity for your frizzy hair all year long, you might want to look a little closer.

While warm weather and moisture in the air do amplify frizz, the real causes often run deeper, and they don't disappear when the seasons change. At The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ, we help clients every week who are frustrated by flyaways, puffiness, and texture changes, even in cooler months.

So what's actually going on? And more importantly, how can you stop it?

    Let's break it down.

    The Myth: Frizz = Humidity

Yes, humidity contributes to frizz. But it's only one part of the picture.

True frizz happens when your hair's cuticle is raised or damaged. That makes it vulnerable to absorbing moisture from the environment, or losing it too quickly, causing the shaft to swell, expand, and resist smoothness.

In other words, frizz is a structural problem, not just a seasonal one.

The Real Culprits Behind Year-Round Frizz

    1. Overwashing
Daily washing (especially with harsh shampoos) strips your hair of its natural oils, leaving it brittle and prone to static and frizz. Try cutting back to 2-3 washes per week. On off days, the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo absorbs oil at the roots without drying out your ends.

    2. Heat Styling Without Protection
Even on low heat, using irons or dryers without a thermal barrier fries the outer cuticle, causing irregular texture. Always use a heat protectant. The Shibui Thermal Protection Mist is lightweight and won't leave your hair feeling coated or greasy.

    3. Incomplete Conditioning
Conditioners and masks that only coat the hair without addressing porosity or protein balance won't fix the issue long-term. Sofia on our team recommends the Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Conditioner for clients dealing with chronic frizz because it actually hydrates the inside of the hair shaft, not just the surface.

    4. Skipping Regular Trims
Split ends fray upward, making even healthy mid-lengths look frizzy. Getting a trim every 8-10 weeks removes the damage before it travels up the shaft. We see this all the time at our Fairfield salon. Clients come in thinking they have a frizz problem when they actually have a split-end problem.

    5. Wrong Products for Your Hair Type
Using lightweight products on thick, dry hair won't cut it. And heavy products on fine hair just weigh it down and make it look greasy. Matching your products to your hair type matters more than most people realize. For fine hair that frizzes, the Aluram Leave-in Conditioner provides moisture without weight. For thicker hair, the Amika Supernova Moisture and Shine Cream smooths and hydrates.

What You Can Do Right Now

    • Switch to a sulfate-free shampoo
    • Always use heat protection before any hot tool
    • Apply a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz product to damp hair
    • Get regular trims every 8-10 weeks
    • Use a microfiber towel or old t-shirt instead of a terry cloth towel (terry creates friction that raises the cuticle)

Frizz doesn't have to be something you just live with. Most of the time, it's fixable with the right routine and the right products. If you're not sure where to start, come see us at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ. We'll figure out what's going on and get you a plan that actually works for your hair.
