10 Hair Habits Every Stylist Wishes You Knew (But We're Too Polite to Say)

Sep 22, 2025by Rona Reyes

Okay, real talk. After fifteen years behind the chair at The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, NJ, I've learned that gorgeous hair isn't magic. It's just good habits. And honestly? There are some things we stylists see every day that make us want to stage interventions.

So here's me, spilling the tea on what really keeps your hair healthy. Consider this your friendly neighborhood stylist's survival guide.

1. Stop Treating Trims Like the Enemy

I get it. You're growing your hair out, and every millimeter counts. But here's the thing: I've watched clients cling to damaged ends for months, only to lose twice as much length when those splits finally travel up the shaft. It's heartbreaking, honestly.

A quarter-inch trim every 8-10 weeks keeps your ends sealed and your hair actually growing longer, faster. It's counterintuitive, but it works every single time.

2. Your Shower Temp Is Probably Too High

I know, I know. A hot shower is sacred. But your hair doesn't agree. Hot water opens the cuticle and strips natural oils, leaving you with frizzy, dull hair that tangles like crazy.

Warm water for washing, cool water for the final rinse. Your color will last longer too. I've seen clients extend their color by an extra 2-3 weeks just from turning the temperature down.

3. You Need to Match Your Products to Your Hair

We see this constantly at our Fairfield salon. Someone with fine hair is using a heavy moisturizing shampoo, or someone with curly hair is using a volumizing formula that dries them out. Products matter, but only if they match what your hair actually needs.

For fine hair, something like Design.Me Puff.ME Volume Shampoo adds body without weighing you down. For thick, dry hair, Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Shampoo is a game changer. Not sure what you need? That's what consultations are for.

4. Brush From the Bottom Up

Starting at the roots and dragging down through tangles? You're basically ripping your hair apart. Start at the ends and gently work your way up. It takes 30 seconds longer and saves you from so much breakage.

A good detangling brush makes this even easier. We sell the Aluram Detangle Brush at the salon and our clients swear by it.

5. Heat Protectant Is NOT Optional

If you use a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron without heat protectant, you're literally cooking your hair. I don't care if you're in a rush. Spray it on. It takes five seconds.

Shibui Thermal Protection Mist is what we use on clients in the salon. It's lightweight, doesn't make hair greasy, and actually protects up to 450 degrees.

6. Stop Sleeping on Cotton Pillowcases

Cotton creates friction that causes frizz, tangles, and breakage overnight. Switch to silk or satin. Your hair will be smoother in the morning, your blowout will last longer, and you'll spend less time detangling. It's one of the easiest upgrades you can make.

7. Overwashing Is Real

Most people don't need to wash their hair every day. For most hair types, 2-3 times a week is perfect. On off days, a good dry shampoo like IGK FIRST CLASS Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo absorbs oil, adds volume, and extends your style.

8. Wet Hair Is Fragile Hair

Your hair is at its weakest when it's wet. Don't brush it aggressively, don't twist it in a tight towel turban, and definitely don't yank a hair tie through it. Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel, then detangle carefully with a wide-tooth comb.

9. Your Diet Shows Up in Your Hair

This one isn't about products. If you're not getting enough protein, iron, and biotin, your hair will tell on you. Dullness, thinning, slow growth. It all traces back to what you're eating. You can use the best shampoo in the world, but if your nutrition is off, your hair won't reach its potential.

10. Find a Stylist You Trust and Actually Listen to Them

We don't give you product recommendations because we want a sale. We give them because we can see what your hair needs. When your stylist says "use less heat" or "try this conditioner," we're not upselling you. We're trying to keep your hair healthy so it looks amazing between appointments.

At The Warehouse Salon in Fairfield, every recommendation we make is based on what we see in your hair. That's it. No agenda, just results.
