  • Short Hair Styling Tips from Kathy at The Warehouse Salon Chatham

    Sep 24, 2025by Nick Mirabella

Almost every day, I hear the same question in my chair: "Kathy, how do I make my short hair look good without spending forever on it?" The truth is, short hair can either be your best friend or your biggest frustration. It all comes down to how you cut it, care for it, and style it. After years of working with short cuts here at The Warehouse Salon, I've learned a few simple habits that make the difference between fighting with your hair and actually enjoying it.

Written by Kathy, senior stylist at The Warehouse Salon. With over 40 years behind the chair, Kathy specializes in short precision cuts and styles for clients across North Jersey.

Tip #1: The Right Cut Makes All the Difference

A short haircut should never be one-size-fits-all. I've had clients bring in pictures of a bob or pixie, and while the photo looks great, we adjust it so it actually works for their texture and face shape. Straight, fine hair might love a sleek bob, but thicker hair may need layers to lighten it up. The goal is a shape that fits your lifestyle as much as it fits your face. That's why sitting down for a proper consultation before we cut is so important. Our clients in Fairfield and across North Jersey have different textures, different routines, and different comfort levels with styling. I factor all of that in before I pick up the scissors.

Tip #2: A Little Styling Goes a Long Way

Short hair shows everything. If you let it go completely natural, sometimes it looks perfect, but other times it can feel unruly. Even the smallest bit of styling makes a huge difference. Whether that's smoothing it with a brush, adding some movement, or simply controlling the front pieces, it doesn't take much. I tell my clients to give themselves five minutes in the morning. That little bit of effort makes your haircut look intentional instead of accidental. The Shibui Sculpting Paste is one of my go-to recommendations for short hair. It gives you control without making your hair feel stiff or crunchy. A small amount worked through the ends adds definition and holds all day.

Tip #3: Heat Tools Can Still Help

Many people assume that short hair doesn't need a flat iron or curling wand. Truth is, those tools are still your best friends when used the right way. For a bob, bending a few sections with a flat iron instantly adds a modern touch. For a pixie, lifting the crown with a blow dryer and round brush changes the entire shape. Just make sure you're protecting your hair first. I always tell my clients to use a Shibui Thermal Protection Mist before any heat styling. It keeps your ends from drying out, which matters even more with short hair because damage shows faster when there's less length to hide it.

Tip #4: Don't Skip the Products

It's a common myth that short hair doesn't need products. I actually think short hair needs them more. The right product does all the heavy lifting for you. A lightweight styling creme smooths things out, a texturizing spray adds movement, and a flexible hairspray locks it all in. For my clients who want that effortless, tousled look, I love Shibui Texturizing Mist. It adds just enough grit and movement without weighing anything down. And for days when you need a quick refresh between washes, Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo absorbs oil and adds volume instantly.

Tip #5: Regular Trims Keep It Looking Fresh

Short hair grows out fast, and when it does, it loses its shape quickly. I recommend my clients come in every four to six weeks for a trim. It's not about cutting off a lot. It's about maintaining the shape so your hair always looks intentional. Think of it like upkeep on anything else you care about. A little maintenance goes a long way. Our clients who stick to that schedule always tell me how much easier their morning routine is because the cut does most of the work.

Short hair is one of the most versatile, low-maintenance options out there when you've got the right cut and the right products. If you've been thinking about going shorter or you just need help with your current cut, come see us.
