First-Time Hair Extensions? What to Expect and How to Care for Them
By Jennifer Lopez, stylist at The Warehouse Salon - DeLand
Hi, I'm Jennifer Lopez, a stylist here at The Warehouse Salon in DeLand, FL. I love working with extensions because of how quickly they can change someone's look and confidence. But I also know it can feel like a big step when it's your first time. Clients ask me all the time what they should know before getting started, so here's my honest advice as if you were sitting in my chair today.
Picking the Right Type for Your Lifestyle
There are several types of extensions, and the best one for you depends on your hair, your budget, and how much maintenance you're willing to do.
- Hand-tied wefts: These are what I use most often. They're lightweight, lay flat against the head, and look incredibly natural. Great for adding both length and volume.
- Tape-in extensions: A popular option for first-timers because they're faster to install and easier to maintain. They last about 6 to 8 weeks before needing to be moved up.
- Keratin (fusion) bonds: These are individual strand attachments. They look amazing but take longer to install and require more care.
- Clip-ins: Perfect if you want the look without the commitment. Great for events or just a fun night out.
During your consultation, we'll feel your hair, look at your density, and figure out which type will blend best and cause the least stress on your natural hair.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Plan for your first extension appointment to take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on the method. I always start with a trim and color match so the extensions blend seamlessly with your natural hair.
There's a small adjustment period. Your scalp might feel a little tight for the first day or two, kind of like wearing a ponytail too long. That's normal and it goes away quickly.
How to Take Care of Your Extensions
This is the part I spend the most time on with first-time clients because proper care is what makes or breaks your extension experience.
Washing
- Use sulfate-free shampoo only. Sulfates can loosen bonds and dry out the extension hair. I recommend the Amika Normcore Signature Shampoo and Amika Normcore Signature Conditioner. They're gentle, smell amazing, and keep both your natural hair and extensions in great shape.
- Wash gently. Don't scrub at the bonds or wefts. Let the shampoo run through them.
- Condition the mid-lengths and ends only. Avoid conditioner near the attachment points.
Brushing
- Use a loop brush or a wide-tooth comb. Start at the ends and work your way up.
- Brush gently at least twice a day to prevent tangles from forming at the bonds.
Sleeping
- Braid your hair or put it in a loose ponytail before bed. This prevents tangling overnight, which is the number one cause of matting.
- A silk pillowcase helps too. It reduces friction and keeps both your natural hair and extensions smooth.
Heat Styling
- You can absolutely heat style extensions, but always use a protectant. The Shibui Thermal Protection Mist works well for this.
- Keep your tools at a moderate temperature. Extensions don't recover from heat damage the way your natural hair can.
Products to Avoid
- Stay away from heavy oils and silicone-based products near the bonds. They can cause slippage.
- Avoid dry shampoo directly on the attachment points.
How Long Do Extensions Last?
With proper care, most extension methods last 6 to 12 weeks before they need to be moved up or replaced. The actual extension hair can often be reused for multiple installs, depending on the quality and how well you take care of it.
Common Myths About Extensions
- "Extensions damage your hair." Not when they're installed and cared for properly. The key is choosing the right method for your hair type and following aftercare instructions.
- "They'll look fake." When color-matched and installed by someone experienced, nobody will know. I've had clients' best friends ask "did you do something different?" without ever guessing extensions.
- "They're only for long hair." Extensions can add volume just as much as length. Some of my clients don't want extra length at all. They just want fuller, thicker hair.
